Quick test of AF100 with SmallHD DP6 HDMI w Canon Lens Mount

Testing HDMI out with SmallHD DP6 and Panasonic AF100. Both camera built in LCD/Viewfinder and HDMI out will run at same time giving a focus puller and camera operator ease of use of AF100. Zebra, peaking, etc will all run on Panasonic LCD leaving HDMI out on SmallHD clean. Both HDMI and HDSDI can not run at same time. Canon 16-35 L mounted using Canon EOS to Micro 4/3 Adaptor with internal aperture ring for aperture control. Test Video shot on AF100 The short test used our new production Panasonic AF100, a Canon 16-35 L series 2,8 lens, Canon EF to micro 4/3 adaptor and Vinten Blue Sticks for support. [...]
HD Audio with your HDDSLR

I have had several questions on how to set up a HDDSLR “rig” for the best audio. We all know that the internal audio on the Canon 5D, 1D, and 7D is very poor. The following is a setup to mount all the audio gear on camera. If you have the manpower I would recommending having an audio technician run the audio independently from the videographer. For redundancy I record audio on the Tascam and the cameras CF card at the same time so I have a backup audio track recording. This method also allows for super fast syncing of the audio channels and video with PluralEyes without a clapboard or [...]
How to pack for the road less traveled

I take for granted and and enjoy the constant motion and chaos of travel. For the last 18 years I have moved every two years and lived outside the United States for 14 of those years. Even when based in one location for a while, I use it as a launching pad to go on trips to other places. For example when I lived in Pakistan for a few years, I traveled to Nepal, India, Thailand, Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Peru, Ecuador, Galapagos, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Luxemburg, Switzerland, and England. Packing and unpacking has become the norm for me. I was at PDN Photo Plus in New [...]
Why I like the SmallHD DP6 field monitor

I have had my SmallHD DP6 for over a month and have used it on several shoots to include the One Day on Earth Documentary and a cross-country road trip with a stop to Moab to hang out with Tom Lowe from timescapes.org. I have been very impressed with the SmallHD DP6 monitor it is now a must have to keep a solid focus. I have found it to be the perfect size for HDDSLR shooting and great for run and gun work. It is so nice it never leaves the rig. Resolution: All I can say is wow! I have become very accustom to the retina display on the iPhone and the DP6 [...]
Working on my new timelapse and camera dolly system

Working on building my second generation of sliders for timelapse and for HDDSLR video. I’m using an Arduino controller and the great openmoco system for the stepper motor. Cant wait for the @MILapse DollyShield to come out for the Arduino. Check out the OpenMoco project.

Behind the scenes with the Vincent Laforet CreativeLive HDDSLR workshop
Here is a behind-the-scenes look at the Vincent Laforet HDDSLR live seminar by CreativeLive. I was lucky enough to be one of the 8 students selected to be in the studio for the seminar. The class was streamed live to tens of thousands of viewers on the Internet. I included the stop to Seattle on my month long driving trek across the western United States after returning from 14 years living and traveling abroad. If you missed the live streaming of the Vincent Laforet training, I recommend you buy the edited download from CreativeLive. The final edit should be completed in a few weeks. Update: Here is the link CreativeLive [...]
At the Vincent Laforet CreativeLive HDDSLR workshop
Over the last three days I attended the Vincent Laforet HDDSLR live seminar by CreativeLive. The event was streamed live to tens of thousands of viewers on the Internet and had 8 photographers on the local Seattle set (you can buy the edited download from CreativeLive). The class was focused for professional photographers who wanted to use the new HD video function on their Canon and Nikon SLR cameras. Vincent, whose work I have been following for a few years, was instrumental in making the HD DSLR craze take off. Almost two years ago he used a prototype Canon 5D Mark II to shoot an amazing video called Reverie with [...]
How to use the Redrock Micro Captain Stubling follow focus rig with a 1D Mark IV or 5D Mark II with battery pack
In order to use the Redrock Micro Captain Stubling DSLR rig with the 5D Mark II with battery pack or with the 1D Mark IV you need to purchase the Redrock microRiser ($175) and the 4” 15mm carbon fiber rod set ($64). This will raise your follow focus system high enough off the base rods of the Captain Stubling to work with the battery pack or 1D mark IV. I leave the DLSR Tripod Platform attached to the tripod and use the Stubling mobile by hitting the fiber rod quick release. Now if Redrock would only make a lighter version of their DSLR Tripod Platform so I could leave it on [...]
